Cholesterol means different things to different people. It is however important that we have better understanding of what cholesterol is all about. Cholesterol is not an entirely bad thing because it has been proven to have loads of benefits to our overall well-being.
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance that the liver produce naturally. We also eat food which are rich in cholesterol. To help transport cholesterol in the blood, the liver produces lipoprotein (particles of fats and protein).
There are two commonly known lipoprotein - Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and High-density lipoprotein (HDL). The LDL, also known as the 'bad' fats contribute to formation of plaques build up along the walls of the arteries. This build up most often contribute to the risk of heart attack and stroke. Although LDL is needed, its important that it is kept below 70 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl)
On the other hand, HDL, the 'good' fats help return LDL cholesterol to the liver so that it can be removed from the body This helps prevent plaques build up in the arteries. Healthy level of HDL is around 50mg/dL.
